On one hand, The GreenHouse functions as a second stage for HotCity, producing a variety of theatrical experiences. One of our current GreenHouse productions, The Probe, conceived and written by HotCity Associate Director, Chuck Harper, was chosen to headline at the 2007 Fringe Theatre Festival in Prague! The GreenHouse allows HotCity to produce experimental, perhaps avant-garde, theatrical works that do not necessarily fit the Mainstage season.
The other mission of The GreenHouse is to present an annual New Play Festival that showcases four to six new “scripts in progress.” Never-produced scripts submitted by playwrights from all over the country are given “staged readings” where they are adjudicated by an esteemed panel of local theatre artists and HotCity artistic staff. This festival occurs in the magnificent Centene Center over the course of one summer weekend and is free and open to the public -- ending with a moonlit rooftop reception where the selection of the “Jury Prize” is announced.
HotCity then provides the recipient of the “Jury Prize” with a ten-day workshop - a process whereby the playwright works with professional actors, directors and dramaturges in creating a final script which is then produced as a “World Premiere” on the HotCity Mainstage the following season! This program also allows for invaluable educational outreach opportunities, enabling local theatre artists and students to participate in the development of new works.
We accept plays all year round -- more information can be found here.
